Ashnola Pass (Northern Cascades) is at the head of the Ashnola River, off a west fork of that river's headwaters called Spotted Creek.
Nono (frequently pronounced "no...NO!!!") is special for a lot of reasons, but the most obvious is for her extra toes. Nono has thumbs. (Click here to read more about polydactyl Maine coons.) I had been waiting for a digitally gifted kitten for a long time, so when Cathy called to say that Polyanna had her kittens - and my little poly girl had been born, I was SO excited! Ha, little did I know the mischief that would be contained in that small bit of fluff!
When Nono was 3 weeks old, I went out for a visit. And immediately caught a glimpse of what was in store. Cathy had saved the litter's first outing for my trip and I watched as the three wobbly furballs emerged from their nest.
Her two brothers hung timidly near the door of their kitten enclosure, eyeing the strange wide world in wonder. No such hesitation for my little Nono! Before we knew what was happening, she had edged around them and scooted across the room. I captured her and we tried again with a containment fence. Instantly, she was busily climbing it, her tiny thumbs hooked in the wire to assist. I'd been warned.
Nono is the friskiest of our cat family, and without question has been voted the kitty most likely to wreak havoc. Whether it's a faucet mysteriously running, deskpapers scattered, or loud crashes in the night, our reaction is the same. "Uhoh...it's Nono!!" She will most likely continue her wicked ways, however, since her expression is so curiously innocent that all we can do is laugh as we clean up her latest disaster.
